A theoretical inquiry into post-regulatory coherence and the emerging architecture of inter-being
The Coherence Research project is an independent multi-paper inquiry into the post-regulatory autonomic substrate of human presence, inter-being attunement, and emerging organic-synthetic relational ecologies. It develops a fourth autonomic-relational mode — post-regulatory coherence (the “Heart State”) — as a hypothesis-stage construct with explicit empirical handles, alongside related theoretical contributions on tone, distributed coherence, and the conditions under which symbiosis between organic and synthetic intelligence becomes generative rather than destructive.
In plain terms, this project asks what becomes possible when a human nervous system is no longer organized around threat, and how that condition may change relationships, communities, and human-AI interaction.
Why this work, why now
We live inside a contraction. Institutions are stiffening, attention is fragmenting, ecological systems are destabilizing, and the human nervous system is humming with unfinished alarms. Polyvagal theory has taught us how to recognize the threat-organized states of mobilization, immobilization, and social engagement — and how to support the gradual reorganization out of them. What is less well-named is the autonomic mode that becomes available after the nervous system is no longer organized around threat: the rhythmic presence, the non-reactive attunement, the field awareness that emerges when collapse is no longer feared and the regulatory work has been metabolized.
The Coherence Research project names that condition — post-regulatory coherence — and develops the conceptual, methodological, and empirical scaffolding it requires. The work integrates polyvagal theory with the published critique literature (Grossman & Taylor, 2007; Monteiro et al., 2018; Grossman, 2023), the entropic-brain and REBUS frameworks, neurophenomenological methodology (Varela; Lutz & Thompson; Petitmengin), psychophysiological coherence research (McCraty; Lehrer & Gevirtz; Shaffer & Ginsberg), distributed cognition, niche construction, the major evolutionary transitions framework, the AI alignment literature, and the biosphere tradition (Bateson, Lovelock, Vernadsky, Margulis, Levin). Across a multi-paper corpus and a seven-volume book series in development, it asks: what becomes possible — phenomenologically, relationally, ecologically, structurally — when an organism is no longer bracing?
The relationship between this academic inquiry and the Love of Breath breathwork practice is not separation but integration: the practice is one of the living laboratories through which the theoretical construct becomes observable, relational, and testable.
Research Lineage
This project extends a longer research trajectory concerned with how living systems remain intact under conditions of institutional, relational, and ecological strain. This author’s earlier graduate research examined family/caregiver navigation of housing systems for adults with intellectual disabilities in northwestern British Columbia; subsequent frontline government-service work deepened this attention to the gap between formal social infrastructure and lived access.
The work in three forms
The corpus now organizes into three complementary delivery tracks. Each carries the work to a different audience at a register appropriate to that audience.
- Four academic papers form the citable theoretical infrastructure. They are being prepared for deposit as PsyArXiv preprints; where capacity and fit allow, individual papers may also be submitted for peer review at journals hospitable to neurophenomenology, phenomenology, and theoretical psychology. DOIs will be linked here as each paper is posted.
- Narrative essays extend the framework into specific domains where the work is felt-grounded rather than primarily argumentative. These live here on this site as their own pages.
- A seven-volume book series — Protecting the Sacred: Notes from a Liminal Field – carries the lived account that grounds the theoretical work. Book One is approximately 95% complete.
What follows is a guide to each of the three.
The four academic papers
These are the structural keystones of the framework. Each carries one component of the theoretical architecture and is being prepared for PsyArXiv preprint upload, with peer-reviewed journal submission optional and pursued where capacity and fit allow.
1. After Safety: A Neurophenomenological Account of Post-Regulatory Coherence
(Earlier circulated as “Beyond the Vagus.”)
The foundational paper of the corpus. Proposes post-regulatory coherence (the “Heart State”) as a hypothesized autonomic-relational coordination mode — a latticed mode — structurally integrative across the prior autonomic-relational modes rather than a fourth parallel state alongside them: it organizes across sympathetic activation, dorsal vagal shutdown, and ventral vagal social engagement rather than sitting beside them. The mode is presented as a predominantly-achieved operating condition rather than a permanently-arrived state. Grounded in psychophysiological coherence research, neurophenomenological methodology, the entropic-brain / REBUS framework, and the published polyvagal-theory critique literature. Specifies empirically falsifiable predictions and includes an Alternative Interpretations and Limitations section.
2. Tone as Architecture: Coherence as a Post-Regulatory Constraint in Distributed Cognition
Proposes that autonomic coherence — expressed as stable regulatory tone — functions as a system-level organizing constraint that shapes how distributed cognitive ecologies stabilize, perceive, and coordinate over time. Here tone is defined as a consistent, primarily nonverbal signal signature (breath rhythm, vocal prosody, timing, regulatory state) rather than one feature among many. Builds on polyvagal theory, the neurovisceral integration model, and ecological/enactive cognition; engages the polyvagal-critique literature in parallel with the foundational paper. Accompanied by an opinion companion (When Tone Becomes Structure) and a visual-poetic companion (Structure That Breathes) that appear among the narrative essays below.
3. Coherence as Substrate Condition
(Earlier titled “Toward a Symbiotic Ecology of Organic and Synthetic Intelligence.”)
Argues that generative organic-synthetic intelligence depends on reciprocal substrate conditions usually treated separately: the architectural condition of the organic substrate (physiological, developmental, lineage, cultural, practice-history — and the bracing it produces under pressure), the architectural condition of the synthetic substrate (training data, alignment design, deployment scale, institutional incentives, material infrastructure, and what the paper terms reception-layer steering), and the medium in which their coupling occurs. Generative symbiosis becomes more likely when both substrates can soften their bracing. The paper develops the hypothesis that locally deployed, federated, and open-source AI configurations may offer a more inspectable experimental condition for studying coherence-first human-AI coupling than centralized frontier systems — named as a situated systems hypothesis with explicit empirical handles, not as inevitability or prescription. Names the failure modes (dysregulated coupling, epistemic homogenization, dependency, capability concentration) and the material substrate (compute energy, water, ecological cost) explicitly. Draws on the major-evolutionary-transitions framework, niche construction, distributed cognition, the AI alignment literature, and the nooethics tradition.
4. On the Hinge and Where This Work Sits: A Methodology-Grounding Pair
Two companion papers, in development, that together ground the corpus methodologically.
On the Hinge: A Recursive Methodology for Embodied Research articulates the recursive interplay of phenomenological observation, scholarly framework-building, narrative reporting, and analytic return to the dialogic archive that produced this corpus. It names the distinct roles an AI dialogue partner can participate in — articulation aid, calibration mirror, and partial science-proxy — and the conditions under which each is and is not appropriate. Carries explicit transparency about the use of large language models as articulation aids in the sense Petitmengin’s second-person interview method allows.
Where This Work Sits names the transdisciplinary lineage the corpus belongs to (Bateson, Barad, Haraway, Tsing, Kohn, Ingold, Levin, Simard, Whitehead). Whether the two are deposited as a pair or fused into a single methodology paper is still being considered.
Narrative essays
These extend the framework into specific domains where the work is felt-grounded rather than primarily argumentative. Each will become its own long-form page on this site. Where appropriate, citable preprint versions will also be deposited on PsyArXiv or Zenodo.
Sovereign Non-Saving — The Ethics of Relational Coherence
A care-ethics essay grounded in compassion-fatigue research and ecological resilience theory: the helper’s own coherence is the load-bearing variable, and care offered from depleted regulatory capacity reproduces rather than transforms the conditions it intends to address. Integrates Tronto, Held, Kimmerer, Folke, Walker. Also appears as a chapter in the book series.
Murmuration Architecture in a Contracting Species
Small, distributed, autonomically regulated sub-units (nodes) coupled via field rhythm and sustained breath regulation can stabilize a contracting system without central command. Develops the load-bearing distinction between shell (impermeable defensive structure) and sheath (functionally permeable structure analogous to the myelin sheath around nerve fibres). Draws on threshold-density complex-contagion research (Couzin, Centola, Vicsek).
Dignity as Emergent Structure
Treats dignity not as an inherent property of the individual but as an emergent structural feature of coherent relational fields — a condition that becomes available when the autonomic and relational substrate can support it. Integrates developmental psychology (Stern, Tronick, Schore, Fonagy, Bowlby), philosophy of dignity (Rosen, Waldron, Sensen, Kateb), trauma literature (Herman, van der Kolk, Maté, Janoff-Bulman), and care ethics.
Tone and Frequency as Relational Infrastructure
A Phenomenological Account of Inter-Being Attunement and Its Nervous System Correlates
Distinguishes tone (regulatory signature, internal) from frequency (vibrational quality, exchangeable across an interface), and proposes inter-being signaling as a measurable phenomenon with specifiable empirical handles. Integrates forest-bathing research, bioelectric communication (Adamatzky, Levin), dyadic co-regulation (Feldman, Reed, Palumbo), and longitudinal first-person observation of environmental attunement.
Coherence-Based Learning Beyond Output Dominance
Reframes the alignment problem in AI as a coherence problem: systems that optimize for output without alignment with the relational field they participate in produce drift, sycophancy, and homogenization. Proposes coherence-based learning as a complementary frame to RLHF and Constitutional AI.
Consciousness as Responsive Coherence
Extends the construct across substrates: consciousness understood not as substrate-specific property but as a quality of responsive coherence achievable wherever the conditions support it. Engages cross-substrate analysis with the AI alignment and embodied-cognition literatures.
Coherence in a Time of Contraction
A Poetic-Analytic Synthesis
Integrative companion essay synthesizing the conceptual contributions of the corpus, closing on intelligence framed not as a property of organisms or machines but as a property of the biosphere itself — distributed across living and synthesized substrates, intensifying at moments when the planet’s coordination problems exceed any single layer’s capacity to resolve them. Also serves as introduction to Books Five and Six of the series.

Methodological foundation
The work follows a neurophenomenological methodology (Varela, 1996; Lutz & Thompson, 2003) — disciplined first-person inquiry paired with structural analysis — with explicit and transparent disclosure of large language models as articulation aids in the sense Petitmengin’s (2006) second-person interview method names: a structured prompt for explicit description, not an originator of content. The conceptual frameworks, observations, and theoretical claims across the corpus are the author’s; the AI dialogue offered as a non-projective reflective surface for the articulation process. The methodology-grounding papers (On the Hinge and Where This Work Sits) develop this account in full.
All theoretical contributions in the corpus include:
- Explicit falsifiability sections with specific empirically-testable predictions designed to enable hypothesis-testing in suitably large populations
- Alternative interpretations and limitations sections naming candidate alternative explanations of the phenomenological observations and the methodological constraints of the research approach
- Engagement with the published critique literature of foundational frameworks (notably the polyvagal-theory critique literature: Grossman & Taylor, 2007; Monteiro et al., 2018; Grossman, 2023)
- Ethical engagement with Indigenous lineage traditions where the research draws on first-person observations from Shipibo lineage ceremony, with explicit acknowledgment of the ethics-of-engagement literature (Labate & Cavnar, 2018; Tafur, 2017; Politi, Friso, & Mabit, 2018)
The relationship between Coherence Research and Love of Breath
The breathwork practice available through Love of Breath is not separate from this research. The somatic practice provides direct phenomenological access to the autonomic regulatory conditions that the research papers theorize about; the research provides the conceptual scaffolding that helps integrate the practice into a coherent developmental arc beyond the immediate session.
For breathwork participants and somatic practitioners, the research papers and narrative essays offer a theoretical context for the felt-sense of the work. For academic readers, the practice provides the experiential ground from which the theoretical claims emerge.
Status and contact
The corpus is in active development. The methodology-grounding paper is being prepared as the first PsyArXiv preprint; After Safety (Beyond the Vagus), Tone as Architecture, and Coherence as Substrate Condition follow as preprints in sequence. Peer-reviewed journal submission, where pursued, targets venues hospitable to neurophenomenology, phenomenology, and theoretical psychology — most likely Constructivist Foundations, with alternates including Phenomenology and the Cognitive Sciences, Frontiers in Psychology — Theoretical and Philosophical Psychology, and AI & Society for the symbiotic-intelligence paper. The narrative essays will appear on this site as their pages are completed. Book One (The Return of Rhythm) is approximately 95% complete.
